Collect Feedback on Student Learning

In most schools, cell phones are not allowed in the classroom and I have to say there are some pretty good reasons for that. But what if these cellphones could help you assess your students learning?

Many teachers would love to have those fancy clicker systems where students answer multiple choice questions and the teacher gets immediate feedback of understanding, but they are a bit pricey don’t you think!

Bring these two ideas together and with a little help from Poll Everywhere, you can be formatively assessing your students in no time! Poll Everywhere allows you to make multiple choice questions that students can text message their vote into. The web service also has a “say anything” feature where students can text message in comments and questions during class. Could this feature get the shy ones “talking”?

Both versions of the polls can be embedded into web pages as well, which makes it easier to get at.  You can have live results appear before the classes eyes.  This tool also opens up a great conversation about data analysis and graphing.

These are free features for those with a login and password, but it comes with limits.  Only 30 responses per poll created, so if you have classes larger than 30 like I do then your going to have a few kids that don’t get to vote.
