Visual Advertisements: ‘Tis the Season

Advertising and persuasion doesn’t just come down to the words the company uses to grab our attention.  Often it is the visual that catches our attention first.  How could your art teacher help educate students about why marketing companies choose the colors, images, texts, etc. to advertise the products they do?  You can even throw in a lesson about symbolism while your at it. Messages are not just conveyed in words, but images as well!

After the lesson has been learned, have students create their own visual advertisement that uses the rules they learned. Sumo Paint is a free online tool that is comparable to Adobe Photoshop and would give student the skills they need to use Photoshop in the future.
